About Kharar

Famed for its skilled goldsmiths, Kharar is a town in Paschim Medinipur District of West Bengal. This city is also called as the hometown of the well-known Bengali reformer and philosopher Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar as he was born in Birsingh-Kharar. This municipality is located on an average altitude of 6 m (20 ft) and was mainly popular for brass and bell utensils in the past. Kharar was once much known all around Bengal and India for its brass and bell utensils. Various bells and brass kitchen utensils like, cups, plates, glasses, cooking pots etc.were sold to the nearby areas like, Ghatal, Chandrakona, Ramjibpur, etc. At that time, the people who did the manufacturing of these utensils are quite creative and rich. Many of its inhabitants in course of time moved veyonf the city and settled in various parts of the country. These people got employed in the work of making gold ornaments and were regarded as the finest goldsmiths all around India for their creative and beautiful artisan talent.
